Do the stepper controller daughter boards (SDM-206x0) only work with the 21x3 boards that have a vertically-oriented 96-pin DIN header, or can they attach at 90 degrees to the right-angle J4 configuration 21x3 board and run normally? It's hard to see from the few pictures & diagrams out there exactly which if any other connectors/headers come together when the boards are stacked, or if the 96-pin J4 is the only connection between the two.

Yes, the SDM-206x0 needs to be on DMC-21x3 boards that have vertical 96-pin connectors.
When purchasing, please purchase them together; best is a one-line part number that includes the configuration. For the reasons above, as well as the fact that we test the units together before shipping, it's always best to do so.
If you have existing DMC-21x3's that you would like to upgrade the amplifier, it's best to do so with an RMA, and send the DMC boards in so that we can pair them together.

Thank you for the insight. Now, I'm fairly sure this is a hopeless question, but is Galil able to actually replace that header block on an existing board so it may accept the sub modules? (it'd be difficult to do this manually, but It thought I'd ask in case you've a tool/machine that can do so with ease) We already have the board we'd like to use, if possible, but would like to add the stepper drivers for a new addition.
I cannot see what exactly is passing through the other connections besides the J4 port, but I assume it is too noise-sensitive to connect the two orthogonal boards with jumpers?

I would give a call in with your current controller's serial number and the desired part number you wish to upgrade to.
