Preparing an Ethernet Connection

Required Hardware

Ethernet connections require an Ethernet cable and an available port to connect to a network on this computer.

Galil strongly recommends a dedicated Network Interface Card (NIC) for running a Galil application.

If you are using a network that has multiple connections, e.g. other Galil hardware, plug the PC and Galil hardware into a network switch.

Network Permissions (Firewalls)

If your sole firewall is the Windows firewall, and you allowed GDK to install the required firewall exceptions, skip to step 3. Otherwise, continue.

During installation, GDK gave a prompt to add the required exceptions to the Windows firewall. If an additional firewall is present, or if it was chosen to not allow GDK to install these permissions, these exceptions will need to be added to any firewall present on the PC in order to allow proper operation. The required firewall exceptions can be found here.

Network Type

Please select the network type that is being set up.

Dedicated Network (Recommended)

If a NIC is available for use as a static network, select the dedicated setup. Static networks are greatly preferred for real-time applications such as motion control systems because it ensures that the devices on the network are only accessed by devices that are important. This ensures the highest performance and responsiveness of the controller. This procedure is valid for PC's where the main internet connection is over WiFi or when there are two NIC's on the PC, one for network access and the other for Galil use.

Open Network

If a separate NIC is not available for use as a dedicated port, then it is possible to put a Galil controller onto an open network with DHCP via a network switch. Select the option below to setup this network type.

Configure for using a Galil on an open network.

Other Network Type

If the network being setup does not fall into either of the above categories, Contact Galil Support for assistance determining the correct way to set up your network.

Step-By-Step GDK is connected to your hardware.
