POE (Power over Ethernet) is a convenient way to power the RIO-47xxx Pocket PLC. A power supply is not needed at the RIO installation because the power is delivered over the Ethernet cable.
A network switch with POE-enabled ports is often used to provide POE for the RIO. Examples of these switches are:
- Netgear FS116P
- Netgear GS108P
- Netgear FS108P
- Airlink ASW408POE
- Airlink ASW308P
If a network switch is already in use that does not provide POE, a power injector can provide POE capabilities when installed inline on an existing CAT5 run. Examples of these devices follow:
- Linksys WAPPOE12 (injector only)
- 3COM 3CNJPSE
- TRENDnet TPE-111GI
Notes:
POE provides power for the RIO only, including the Analog I/O. Optically isolated digital I/O requires a separate DC bus.
The RIO is 10/100. Gigabit network hardware comes with a higher price-tag, and is unnecessary on a 10/100 network.
